Artist at Work! Don’t stand still too long, even with a camera – you might get painted!
Jacqueline Hill paints everything – walls, canvas, paper, all sorts of subjects & styles – everything!
Diversity of Art
Anyone visiting Jacqueline Hill’s studio gallery or one of her exhibitions is amazed to see the diversity of art styles, mediums and subject matter. Many people have thought that half a dozen artists are exhibiting, the range of high quality artworks is so diverse. The sizes range from tiny miniatures to huge artworks that could only fit on a wall of a resort foyer.

After drawing constantly as a child, Jacqueline picked up a paintbrush for the first time as an adult and won an award (Traffic Stopper - top 10 out of 300) for her Brisbane City Council signal box ‘Day & Night over the Brisbane River’ featuring possums riding bicycles.

Her signal box art caught the eye of three separate business owners who subsequently commissioned her to paint murals for their premises. Three of her other signal boxes can be seen on Coronation Drive.
“I have always just loved colour. When I see a wonderful colour I find it delicious enough to actually make my mouth water!"
Experimenting with different media is exciting and challenging for Jacqeline: she switches between each paint medium depending on her mood or the subject of the painting. Her first choice and her most natural medium is watercolour for quick sketches, however she loves the fast, expressiveness and vibrant colour of pastels, the “delicious movement” of oils, and the depth of glazing & real practicality of acrylics. Photography is also a passion: her camera is one of her most useful and powerful tools as an artist.

East Meets West Series
A constant fascination with Eastern culture & philosophies led to her studying Chinese Brush and Japanese Sumi-e (ink painting & calligraphy with traditional brushes on rice paper). Eventually she has merged these two styles with her love for animals and now has an extremely popular Eastern-style watercolour animal series which uses the ancient Eastern techniques with Western materials.
Artwork – Queensland Rainforest
This painting was a commission for a home in Pullenvale, Brisbane, and featured local Queensland rainforest. The original request was for 3 panels but the clients loved it so much when they saw it that they commissioned an extra two panels to fit either side.
Surprising Former Career
- Originally studied as a computer scientist majoring in mathematics & science.
- Qualifications: First class honours degree in Computer Science, thesis on robotics and artificial intelligence – University of Adelaide 1983. (B.Sc. Hons)
- Worked for many years very successfully as a computer programmer/analyst in the engineering field. Also trained mine site staff around Australia and overseas in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software

True Vocation
“I came to feel that my ‘true vocation’, or life purpose, lay elsewhere. After many restless years of plunging into any form of art or craft I could lay my hands on every weekend, I finally decided it was time to follow my true path in life, in the art field. I have never been happier. I encourage everyone to follow their heart.”
Water is a recurring subject, nature & animals keep creeping onto her canvas, and a recent passion for creating figurative works from life has not yet dissipated.
“Every time I paint all my worries disappear, my spirits lift and the world feels right again. On special paintings, time vanishes and so do I.
“When I am not at the easel I am often still painting in my mind. An image will gradually develop form in my head and nag me endlessly until I get to the easel and empty it out!”
Many years ago Jacqui undertook an exercise to uncover her true, inner spirit’s reason for being on the planet.
“I found that my mission in life is to create beauty and joy in people’s lives. Painting is an avenue where I can do that every day – and it makes me deeply satisfied and happy when I achieve it.
“I always paint truly from the heart.”
