Leonie Norton is a renowned Sydney based botanical artist and international tutor, where her knowledge and skills are in high demand throughout Australia and many overseas destinations. She is past President of the Botanical Art Society of Australia and is the author of a recent book published by the National Library of Australia, ‘Women of Flowers: Botanical Art in Australia from the 1830s to the 1960s’.
After completing a BA/VA, a BFA (Hons) in Plant and Wildlife Illustration and a Grad.Dip.Ed. in Adult Education, she was the first botanical artist to teach in Community Colleges in Sydney, where she opened the door for others to follow.
As well as continuing her regular courses and workshops at WEA Sydney, she also operates a Botanical Art External Course where she teaches students of all skill levels throughout Australia and globally, by correspondence and internet. Leonie also teaches at Summer Schools and workshops in regional Australia and overseas.
Exhibiting annually at the Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney and the Botanical Art Society of Australia Members Exhibition, she is also invited to exhibit at various other venues, such as the Southern Highlands Annual Botanical Art Exhibition and the Canberra Botanical Exhibition. She has also exhibited in New Zealand, the UK, Fiji and Canada, where she also does extensive teaching.
Along with her love of plants and of painting their meticulous details, the other balance in her life is sketching, which is combined with travel. Taking like-minded people on Holiday Sketching Tours broadens her horizons, hones her skills, increases her observational skills, and allows her to pass on her knowledge and enjoyment of art to others.
Some of the destinations she has taken tours are Fiji, Bali, Vietnam and the UK with other tours planned for South India, the Kimberley and New Zealand South Island in Autumn. All skill levels enjoy the travel, learning the finer points of sketching and how to interpret the landscape, with the added satisfaction of returning home with a sketchbook of very impressive and unique sketches, which hold many memories of their trip.
Leonie has had many articles published in Artists’ Palette and the Australian Artist magazines, as well as regular articles in the Botanical Art Society Newsletter. Nature and Health Magazine has been featuring Leonie’s botanical paintings in every issue since 2005, where she illustrates herbal plants.
