"Art should astonish, transmute, transfix. One must work at the tissue between truth and paranoia."

Colour and Light in Oils
Often seen as dark and gloomy, oils can, in fact, be used to create colourful and light paintings that are wonderfully expressive. One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. Immediately striking in all his pictures is the skilful way he handles colour to interpret the special qualities of light and mood found in a certain moment in time.

The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist
This reference to painting with oils compares leading brands of paints. It describes mediums, solvents and varnishes; illustrates brushes, pallettes and other tools; and shows both traditional and unconventional techniques.

Tutor feature: Kay Chapman
Kay Chapman - “anyone can learn to draw… it’s easy, when you know how!”
Kay loves nature and the landscape, the subtleties of light, shadow and the moods of changing seasons. She particularly likes the landscape within the Bathurst Regional Area: rolling hills, lovely little streams and beautiful rivers, secret places to withdraw and rejuvenate. Kay is also inspired by rural historical buildings, whether magnificent heritage structures or someone’s humble corrugated iron abode of days long gone. Equally important for Kay is the subject of still life, capturing a moment in time.

Workshop review: Exploring the Abstract with Yvonne Langshaw
In May this year, I was very excited to join Yvonne Langshaw in a two day workshop at Ku-Ring-Gai Art Centre in Roseville, NSW. The studio was light and airy with plenty of room for everyone to work comfortably. Tables and easels were all set up and ready for the workshop participants.
Abstract art is sometimes thought of as quite childish, and while parents in art galleries are sometimes heard to say “my child could do that!”, painting in an abstract form is surprisingly difficult. It requires a real understanding of colour, tone and line to be able to create the beautiful abstract art works that Yvonne Langshaw consistently produces.

Chit Chat
Spring! No need to say more. When you live in a particularly cold climate like Bathurst…spring is a joy and a relief!
I have a hankering to visit Sicily, which is where both my parents were born. I have been there to visit on three occasions but this time I would like to stay in Palermo and live like a local going to the mercato everyday for my fresh produce. Am starting to plan in a tentative way to find an apartment near il centro and the mercato and to learn as much as I can before going.
As a town it has an ancient and complex history. Will bring you snippets from time to time as I learn more.

This term at TAFE we are exploring the use of metal in sculptures. In the first few weeks we tackled oxy welding, oxy cutting, mig welding and watched tig welding. I didn't think it would happen, but with thorough guidance, supervision and safety paramount, we are all becoming quite comfortable to the the sound of popping gas, the heat and flames, as well as the goggles and helmets we need to wear for safety.
We have now started our sculptures, which in my case is an exploration of a wonderful piece of equipment that rolls metal. We are certainly very lucky to be able to experience a workshop with the variety of equipment that is normally outside the realm of an artist. It has also provided me with a new found appreciation for all the welders and the amazing work they do under the most trying conditions. We work standing up in a controlled environment, but many welders need to work while under extreme conditions, think of the welders on the Harbour Bridge!
