Expressive Drawing: A Practical Guide to Freeing the Artist Within

Written by arts educator Steven Aimone, it’s packed with solid, friendly, hands-on instruction, as well as inspiring images. Aimone teaches an accessible style called expressive drawing that emphasizes line and mark, rather than rendering a specific object, which for many people, can create barriers to self-expression.

Workshop focus: Drawings in the Air with Jade Oakley

Sound Waves by Jade OakleyIn the tradition of the old French ateliers, ArtWorkshops Australia brings together those with a desire to create and those with a passion to share their knowledge through our series of weekend workshops. Conversing with your peers and cultivating meaningful connections, is central to becoming an interesting artist. Come and enjoy this extraordinary experience with Australia's best art-practitioners.

Our profile workshop is with the talented Jade Oakley in our Sydney studio for 2 days from 10-11 April 2010.

Honeytree II by Jade OakleyDrawings in the Air’ is a sculptural mobile workshop inspired by beautiful objects from nature such as beach pebbles, feathers, seed pods, shells and leaves.  Students will explore these objects through drawing, painting and collage, and will then learn to translate these drawings into a mobile, to make ‘Drawings in the air’. Jade Oakley’s filigree works manage to walk that difficult line between painting and sculpture. The color effects are stunning - a mobile may appear to have been dipped in ink, or reveal a wash of color like brackish water over white sands.

Workshop review: Collagraph adventure with Sonja Georgeson

Sonja and student collage artist await the ‘reveal’…Sonja Georgeson’s excellent standing as an art teacher in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney was something I had long heard about from various friends and colleagues so I snapped up the chance to take a collagraph workshop with her when a friend handed me the flyer. It was one of those gifts from the gods that falls into your lap at just the right time.

I then discovered that this was in fact the last workshop Sonja would be running from her studio in Manly, as she was moving up to the Queensland hinterland early in the new year! Sad for us here in Sydney – great for you further north!

Collagraph is an experimental form of printmaking which explores texture as much, or more than, other compositional elements of line, shape, colour and tone. Every stage of the production is affected by the texture and it is integral to the final result.

Chit Chat

Bali singing“Seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness...”  Oh how I LOVE Autumn in the tablelands. This morning the mist has flowed in and covered everything in a soft grey blue. Speaking of soft grey blue we have some new chickens. One has bluey coloured feet and most are rich in colours and patterns.

I recently spent a week in Bali and was looking at words to describe the place and I came up with singing. The place sings…it is so full of life!

The air is singing as it is so full of moisture…the plants are singing as they suck up the moisture through their roots and from the air and my skin became like that of a new born baby (well almost!). I can feel a few paintings coming out of this holiday.

I am off to the farmers' markets this morning…living in the country sure does have its benefits!

Teresa

The Beach at SunsetWhile Teresa enjoys the trees, bushland and space in and around Bathurst, I enjoy a total contrast as I live near the ocean surrounded by coastal bush land.

One of my favourite pastimes is walking along the beach - feet in the water, listening to the sounds of the waves while watching the birds dive in and out of the water. Yesterday, a hawk hovered in the blue sky, patiently waiting for a tasty morsel.

I find it interesting to see how our environment influences the colours we use, the subject of our paintings, the shapes and lines that spark an interest in us. You can see this clearly when you look at both Teresa's work and my own. For instance Teresa loves green and I love blue! How does your environment affect you and the artworks you create?
