Workshop focus: Gurragawee... creative workshops and artstays in Byron Bay

Ralph Hobbs SketchbooksThe use by artists of visual sketchbooks is a fundamental part of developing their art practice. Whether a novice or professional artist, the ability to document progress and to visually work through ideas is an important step in creating work that has a depth of meaning to the artist and its audience. The sketchbook can provide the blueprint to thematic consistency in a body artwork, or it can provide an irreplaceable document of a journey. Read more >

Workshop review: Mitchell School of Arts - Winter School

Winter morning on Bathurst campusBathurst in winter might seem a daunting idea for a week’s break. However, there is a certain appeal to walking around the University campus early each morning rugged up with gloves, scarves and coats seeing the frost on the trees and even coming up close and personal with a tame large grey kangaroo. The Charles Sturt University campus is an idyllic rural setting, a short walk from the town centre. Read more >

Latest Tips and Tricks

  • Tips and Tricks It pays to be creative - and washes away the stress

Sydney is endowed with a rich artistic life. Writers, painters, poets, photographers, singers, dancers, actors, architects and designers thrive here. From the beginning, serious attention has been paid to theatres, galleries, concert halls – as well as public art – for the delight and stimulation of the populace. • The Paperclay Revolution

An international clay revolution has been building for the last 20 years. Currently over a third of all clay used in Australian studios and classrooms is paperclay. While paperclay use started in Australia and the USA about the same time, the current USA use is well below this percentage. However USA volumes have consistantly been doubling annually, for the last decade. While there have been differences between counties, what is consistent is a steady increase in paperclay use, and its spread across all ceramic techniques and all types of clays. Read more >

Spring sprang and then disappeared in Bathurst

Back to 0 degrees the last few nights. But the wattle doesn’t seem to mind the cold. Ever noticed how  the wattle and hardenbergia come out at the same time. Complementary colours!  In nature there are so many examples of the complementary colours zinging for our pleasure.  Like the red stalks on the green gum leaves and the sunset orange against blue.

Meanwhile Stephanie and I are booking into a few workshops (to make up for the ones I’ve missed since breaking my leg) which we’ll write about in the next few newsletters…

Pen and Ink drawing by StephanieHave you ever looked at your art tutor's work and wondered why you can't seem to get that stroke quite right or the ink isn't flowing in the same way.

Have a closer look at the materials your tutor is using. Last week during an ink and wash drawing session I couldn't seem to get the same strokes or effects until I realised I was using the wrong type of nib and paper!

The nibs that made such wonderful strokes were the Speedball B round series of nibs - they also come in flat and oblique styles. What a difference! And the paper - much heavier gauge multimedia paper or watercolour paper handles the extra water beautifully!

While it doesn't make up for a lack of talent it sure helps!
