"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves."
C. G. Jung

Tutor feature: Gill Burke at the Silken Tent

Artwork by Gill BurkeGill Burke trained at Hastings School of Art, UK, more years ago than she cares to remember. She then worked as a Scenic Artist, painting theatre scenery for Repertory Theatre, film sets and pantomime backcloths. From then on however, Gill’s career path took many and various turns until it circled back to art again.

Marriage followed by two children intervened but Gill continued to paint and very occasionally exhibit.

Workshop review: 2009 Contempo and The Photo Studio Workshops

Up Above - photo by Cindy GoodeContempo (of NSW Art Gallery) and North Sullivan of The Photo Studio have combined to create a program of photography workshops for 2009.

I attended the beginners Point and Shoot course which ran for three Sundays at the gallery and one Sunday at North’s studio in Glebe from 10:30am to 4:00pm. The course was very structured and well planned designed for absolute beginners of digital photography. No matter if you had a $200.00 digital hand held or a $2,500.00 digital SLR we were all the same – learning to get the most out of our cameras.. • Ten Tips on Taking a Workshop
(Or, Advice from Someone Who Has Been on Both Sides of the Easel)
    1. First, select a workshop that has something specific you want or need to learn, such as drawing, design, color or experimental techniques. Don't take a workshop just because everybody else you know is going.
    2. Look for an instructor whose techniques or expertise fit in with your artistic goals.

Stephanie and I met in Leura in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney for a blueBanksia meeting. Since we live four hours drive apart we often meet in the mountains to work on future planning for the site.

We started off with a divine massage at Yvasti. This helped to get us in a relaxed and creative space. Rebecca and Louise who did our massages really know their craft and we left floating on air.

This followed with discussions about our future vision of blueBanksia - to be more than a directory but also a place to find information about a range of things a practicing or beginner artist needs in order to produce their work. Some of the ideas we will be implementing in the near future are sections for Travelling Tutors, Tutor Profile and Gallery, Overseas Tours and Retail Art Suppliers.

Of course, we also managed to get in some great shopping!

The 24th of February 2009 was a very important day as it marked the start of the 2009 filling of Lake Eyre. Read this article - Lake Eyre's waters bring dead centre to life courtesy of the Australian newspaper and view stunning images by Kelly Barnes.

Here is another link to an ABC 7.30pm report titled Wildlife returns to transformed Lake Eyre.

Stephanie and I are hoping that we can get there before it empties!

It was with great sadness that I learnt of the death of Jane Olsen, eldest daughter of John Olsen. Jane was a wonderful, beautiful and gentle woman, who inspired everyone around her with her creative talent and enthusiasm. She will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Our sincerest condolences go to her family.

Where does time go? It's my constant lament! So here we are again looking back on the month that was and noticing what a trap it is to be constantly busy.

It's time for our readers to let us know how they incorporate art into their lives. I for one, am open to more strategies to deal with this oscillation between wanting to paint and doing what's needed next at home, for my TAFE course and blueBanksia.

Here's to more time - perhaps a choice?
