McGregor Summer School: January, 2013 McGregor Winter School: 2-6 July 2012 McGregor on the Bay: 21-24 September, 2012
January 2013
Workshop Location: University of Southern Queensland Toowomba Campus West Street TOOWOOMBA
One of Australia’s longest running residential arts retreats, offering an exhilarating mix of performing, visual and creative arts for all ages at the one venue. Established in 1969, offering just three classes in painting with three tutors and 43 students, the USQ McGregor Summer School has grown to be one of the largest cultural events of its kind in Australia.
Over 50 classes ranging from painting to literature and music to jewellery making, are now offered at the ten-day retreat, attracting tutors and participants from around the globe.
The Music segment covers all orchestral instruments, plus piano and percussion as well as Jazz Vocal and Music Theatre classes. The finest tutors and conductors from around the country assemble to both challenge and stimulate musicians young and old in ensembles and choirs especially formed to provide the best opportunity for musical development and enjoyment.
Painters (18 years and over) are well catered for with classes in Oils, Acrylics, Watercolours, Mixed Media, Pastel and Charcoal ranging from beginners to advanced and a painting and drawing class especially for high school students in Years 10 to 12 is offered. Other fine arts classes include drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
The range of creative arts classes spans hand embroidery, calligraphy, traditional furniture making with woodcarving, digital imaging and digital photography, creative writing and the popular language class, ‘Italian for Travellers’.

Jewellery making is also a popular arm of the Summer School, with jewellers from around the nation presenting classes in introductory jewellery making, glass bead making, cloisonné enamelling, gem setting and the art of creating truly unique and unusual pieces.
On-campus accommodation is available at the University’s residential colleges in serviced single rooms with a choice of private or shared bathrooms. Breakfast and dinner are provided daily, so you don’t have to worry about getting meals or doing any household chores.
The ten days are action-packed, with nightly tutors’ concerts and powerpoint presentations, a Masked Ball, movie nights and a Jazz Concert on the middle Sunday afternoon featuring some of Australia’s finest musicians. The atmosphere is filled with creative energy and the excitement of learning, interaction between tutors and students and the making of lifelong friends from all over the country and overseas.
And it doesn’t end there! Attending a McGregor workshop allows students to focus on new horizons and to clearly visualise their artistic aspirations. Creativity is stimulated and fostered throughout the retreat, sending participants home with the knowledge and direction to further expand their skills, and in many cases disseminate their newfound knowledge throughout their own community.

The USQ McGregor Winter School offers a variety of visual and creative arts classes including painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and jewellery. Established in 1987, Winter School has grown out of the success of the celebrated USQ McGregor Summer Schools, providing an intimate and creative atmosphere for artists to learn and create. Offering between 15 and 20b classes in visual and creative arts each July, the Winter School attracts over 150 students from all over Australia to the University’s beautiful Toowoomba campus.
Toowoomba’s award-winning Japanese Garden is adjacent to the University, and students in all disciplines have the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful and tranquil surroundings, while painters and photographers often derive inspiration from it for their works.
The atmosphere is more intimate and intense than the Summer School, as students strive to fit the maximum amount of learning into the five days. Classes cater for people at every stage of development, from total beginners to professionals who want to brush up on skills, have time to experiment, meet friends, or just have a break from their normal routine. The tutors are among the best in Australia in their particular disciplines, and in some cases, world renowned.
On-campus accommodation is available at the University’s residential colleges in heated single rooms with shared bathrooms. Breakfast and dinner are provided daily, so you don’t have to plan meals at the end of the day, go grocery shopping or do the washing up!
Release your inner artist in a relaxing, but stimulating workshop environment in beautiful surroundings.
