Ralph Hobbs SketchbooksThe use by artists of visual sketchbooks is a fundamental part of developing their art practice. Whether a novice or professional artist, the ability to document progress and to visually work through ideas is an important step in creating work that has a depth of meaning to the artist and its audience. The sketchbook can provide the blueprint to thematic consistency in a body artwork, or it can provide an irreplaceable document of a journey.

Colour and Light in Oils

Often seen as dark and gloomy, oils can, in fact, be used to create colourful and light paintings that are wonderfully expressive. One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. Immediately striking in all his pictures is the skilful way he handles colour to interpret the special qualities of light and mood found in a certain moment in time.
