Bathurst NSW is well known for its car racing but sadly not as well known for another event it h osts twice yearly on the campus of Sturt University, the Mitchell School of Arts Summer and Winter Artists Workshops.
What a truly delightful way to spend a week that is not only informative and a great learning curve but also a chance to meet really nice like minded people and have some fun as well.
It is especially good for those who love to paint and for one reason or another can never devote a whole week at a stretch without interruption.
I say paint because that’s what is covered in the majority of classes but that means all mediums and different methods within those mediums along with drawing and mixed media.
The Mitchell School of Arts is fortunate in having a staff of wonderfully talented tutors who not only are experts at their particular craft but have the ability and the desire to pass on to others what they have learnt over many years. Class work is taken very seriously but lightened by many fun moments.
Right from the moment of arrival on the Sunday there is a welcoming feeling and in the free time that is available out of classes which begin on Monday and run pretty much 9 to 5 each day, there is always something organized to do if one wishes. Bathurst is an interesting country town and those that arrive early on the Sunday often enjoy taking a look around. After the evening meal each day there are activities organised such as demonstrations of new paints and products on the market, Tutors exhibitions a talent show and on the last night an exhibition of students work. On the other hand if you prefer a quiet night in your digs reading or watching TV that is perfectly OK too.
The digs are clean and comfortable with linen supplied (though you may want to take an extra towel) and are air conditioned in summer and warm and snug in winter. Accommodation is on a single basis with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities if needed.
Students receive a list of supplies needed for the particular class they have chosen well in advance however the Art Scene runs a well stocked shop on Campus that is open every day to purchase materials on the spot. Not only this but framing is available and the staff work very hard particularly at the end of the week when students work can be framed ready for the Students' Exhibition on the last night.

Three meals a day plus a generous morning and afternoon tea are served in the Campus cafeteria where they do a wonderful job of catering for all tastes and most dietary requirements. During the week of the Winter classes there is a special "Christmas in July" lunch.
The ages of students are varied and the students come from all walks of life.
All are made to feel welcome and many friendships are formed that continue year after year.
