Art Workshop Focus - Winter School 13th – 17th July 2009
STURT is a centre for the teaching, sale, production and exhibition of contemporary Australian craft and design situated at Mittagong, in the Southern Highlands of NSW. STURT was established in 1941 by Winifred West, creating a unique centre which has a strong tradition of studio based tuition in the crafts.
The STURT campus consists of gardens, a gallery, shop, café and workshops in the disciplines of wood, jewellery, textiles and ceramics.
Courses are run in full-time, part-time and short course formats. The 12-month Certificate IV in Fine Woodworking attracts twelve students each year, and the popular 12-week full time courses in Fine Woodworking were introduced in 2008. Part-time classes in ceramics, wood, jewellery and weaving attract over sixty students each week.
The Summer and Winter Schools which include a wide range of courses in the fine arts as well as crafts remain a significant highlight of the year. The Artist-in-Residence program has been an important addition to STURT and has seen many invited artists working in the studios at STURT.
STURT Craft Centre is an important part of the cultural history of Australia, and as such attracts tutors, students and artists from all over the world.
Details of all courses and exhibitions can be found on our website www.sturt.nsw.edu.au or by phoning STURT Gallery on 02 4860 2083.
