Holiday Sketching in South India E-mail

14-22 April 2012 with Leonie Norton

Traditional luxury houseboat Travel lightly with a sketchbook, watercolour travelling palette, black pen and a pencil. Holiday sketching combines a unique and enjoyable holiday with learning the art of pen and watercolour to record your visual memories.

Leonie Norton is a prominent botanical artist and highly experienced international tutor who has been taking overseas tours for many years. This is a wonderful way to travel, whether as a single or with a non participating partner, who will be well looked after as the group sketches.

Dedicated sketching stops morning and afternoon with individual attention and reviews ensure that each participant receives quality tuition. All skill levels are welcome. These limited number tours are not the traditional package tours, but more like travelling with a group of friends.

Where do you go, what do you see?

Local guides will take us away from the hustle and bustle to some ‘off the beaten track’ locations with wonderful sketching opportunities.

Sketch from a traditional luxury houseboat as you glide along the tranquil labyrinth of the backwaters, lagoons, lakes and canals of Kerala. Fringed with dense tropical vegetation, there are sketching, relaxing and socialising opportunities as this is an overnight experience, not to be missed.

Lake Periyar

At Periyar, the Wildlife Sanctuary is the finest in South India and is home to a unique and diverse range of flora fauna and bird life. Enjoy a sunset boat ride on the 26 sq. km Periyar Lake in the heart of the park, which is the only wildlife sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. Over 700  Asian elephants roam the sanctuary forests as well as tigers and other native animals who come to the lake to drink and frolic. Do some quick sketches.

India

No visit to South India is complete without visiting a Spice Plantation - the most abundantly found spice is pepper, but you will also see a variety of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric and curry leaves on the slanting slopes of Thekkady. The spice trade in South India dates back three thousand years. Many more sketching opportunities are found here.

There are sightseeing tours of Cochin including the Dutch Palace which features astonishing murals and the 16th century Jewish synagogue, decorated with magnificent Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers.

Experience the highly stylised classical Kathakali dance-drama of Kerala which originated in the 17th century. It is renowned for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and accompanying percussion.

What could be more interactive than an afternoon cooking demonstration including lunch?

The tour includes all of the above and much more, with abundant sketching opportunities.
