Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer School 2011

Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer SchoolEach summer the University of Tasmania’s School of Visual and Performing Arts and partners present a vibrant and diverse program of creative arts learning workshops in the Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer School held in Launceston, Tasmania 10 – 21 January 2011.

The Summer School provides teachers, arts professionals, students and the general public with the opportunity for professional development and social interaction over eight teaching days in summer.

The program of specialist workshops is designed to offer participants the opportunity to expand existing skills, grow confidence in new endeavours and be inspired by our highly respected professional tutors. During the Summer School participants will make new friends, learn different creative techniques and enjoy all that Launceston and Tasmania has to offer during summer.

Workshops include Painting, Drawing, Dance, Street Art and Graffiti, Musical Theatre, Sculpture, Photography, Ceramics, Textiles, Effective Speaking Skills, Improvisation, Digital Media, Glass, Culinary Design, Printmaking, Computers in Furniture Design and many more.

Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer SchoolAll members of the public over the age of 16 years are invited to apply to join any of the UTAS presented Summer School workshops and can chose to be assessed for credit towards further University studies or alternatively participate on a non-assessment basis for personal interest. All workshops offered by the University of Tasmania attract a 12.5% weighting and students will be enrolled in the Associate Degree in Arts. The unit may count to further study towards a number of degrees at University.

The Summer School is a cultural community-based partnership between the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian Academy and Polytechnic, Stompin Dance and the Launceston City Council.

The Newstead Campus of the Polytechnic also run their very successful Rock Music Summer School in the Summer School program. The Rock Music Summer School has been in operation for eighteen years and is run as a holiday non-residential extension program for musicians and music students of all ages interested in contemporary music.

A highlight in the Summer School program is the workshop Exploring Tasmanian Aboriginal lifeworlds, placescapes and cultural art/practice. The workshop will be delivered by UTAS lecturer in the School of Philosophy and Research Fellow of the Community Engaged Aboriginal Research Initiative, Dr Linn Miller; Aboriginal historian, cultural geographer and Elder from the islands of eastern Bass Strait, Patsy Cameron; and Tasmanian Aboriginal artist, Fiona Maher.

Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer SchoolThis workshop exposes participants to Aboriginal heritage and culture in a Tasmanian context. Participants will be introduced to elements of Aboriginal philosophy and explore the significance of Aboriginal connections to country, in both theory and practice. Fieldtrips to significant sites within Northeast Tasmania will offer unique opportunities for participants to experience the region and to gain a deeper understanding of how the landscape inspires the works of contemporary and traditional Aboriginal cultural expressions.

Participants wishing to arrange accommodation in Launceston have access to a wide variety of possibilities: Accommodation Services at the University of Tasmania offers Summer School guests a choice of single bedrooms with shared facilities or whole units (5 or 6 bedrooms) on the Newnham campus; the Newstead Student Residence is a 50 bed hostel consisting of a of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom units; and for private accommodation the Launceston Travel Centre has access to many different options to suit any budget.
