Drawings in the Air Workshop

‘Drawings in the air’ is a sculptural mobile workshop inspired by beautiful objects from nature such as beach pebbles, feathers, seed pods, shells and leaves. Students will explore these objects through drawing, painting and collage, and will then learn to translate these drawings into a mobile, to make ‘Drawings in the air’. Jade Oakley’s filigree works manage to walk that difficult line between painting and sculpture. The color effects are stunning - a mobile may appear to have been dipped in ink, or reveal a wash of color like brackish water over white sands.
"As an artist I have created paintings, installations and more recently mobiles. When I make a mobile or an installation, each element is ‘pushed’ to the point where it is most unstable, and most beautiful. Only when the elements have reached their ‘tipping point’ does the artwork take on a kind of magic - a sense of effortless levitation in space. I use materials such as fine wire, feathers and translucent papers, so that although the works are quite robust, they carry a sense of the poetry of impermanence. To me there is something magical about movement. I have always been transfixed by movement, especially the gentle movement of delicate forms in space." - Jade Oakley artist

As a participant of this workshop you will explore and create a beautiful sculptural mobile. Held in our historical 19th Century carriage house in the vibrant Surry Hills, Art Workshops Australia offers a relaxed, professional approach to guide beginners in basic practice, and gives experienced artists the opportunity to glean new insights and re invigorate their work. You will then finish the day with a glass of wine and light supper contemplating your work with your fellow artists.
