2010 SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM HEATS UP
The fourth-annual Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer School will again be offered this 13 – 22 January in Launceston, with a selection of dynamic new creative arts workshops to choose from.
The event is an initiative of the University of Tasmania’s School of Visual and Performing Arts and continues to grow momentum with new program partners bolstering the Summer School’s capacity to reach broader audiences and offer inter-disciplinary learning opportunities within a stimulating and creative atmosphere.
Program partners are the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian Polytechnic, Launceston College, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and the Launceston City Council.
For the first time the School of Philosophy will offer their Aboriginal Philosophy workshop in the 2010 program. The workshop will be delivered by lecturer in the School of Philosophy and Research Fellow of the Community Engaged Aboriginal Research Initiative, Dr Linn Miller; Aboriginal historian, cultural geographer and Elder from the islands of eastern Bass Strait, Patsy Cameron; and Tasmanian Aboriginal artist, Fiona Maher.
This workshop exposes students to Aboriginal heritage and culture in a Tasmanian context. Participants will be introduced to elements of Aboriginal philosophy and explore the significance of Aboriginal connections to country, in both theory and practice. Fieldtrips to significant sites within Northeast Tasmania will offer unique opportunities for participants to experience the region and to gain a deeper understanding of how the landscape inspires the works of contemporary and traditional Aboriginal cultural expressions.
Dr Linn Miller has said that the Tasmanian Creative Arts Summer School provides a vibrant and creative environment in which to teach and learn Philosophy.
“Offering a workshop in the Summer School program has allowed the School of Philosophy the opportunity to showcase the relevance and applicability of its units across fields of inquiry and communities of practice, while at the same time extending the scope of its community outreach activities. We are delighted to be participating!”
Summer School manager, Jana Harper, has said many of our creative arts workshops have a distinct Tasmanian experience and include field trips to explore your creative response to our unique environment.
“We would like to invite existing University students, college students, teachers and members of the general public to join us in summer for a very special and rewarding experience. Interstate university students wishing to attend the Summer School are encouraged to seek cross-institutional recognition from their home institutions.”
The diverse program of specialist workshops is designed to offer you the opportunity to expand your existing skills, grow confidence in new endeavours and be inspired by the highly respected professional tutors. Workshops include: virtual reality and new media technology, contemporary dance, printmaking, drawing in the landscape, furniture design, wilderness studies, painting, photography, culinary design and many more.
During the Summer School you will be able to make new friends, learn different creative techniques and enjoy all that Launceston and Tasmania has to offer during summer.
