Bali, Ubud, Candidasa
19-25 September 2010
This tour explores the enchanting Indonesian island of Bali, with its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions. These include miles of sandy beaches, picturesque rice terraces, towering active volcanoes over 3,000 metres (10,000 ft.) high, fast flowing rivers, deep ravines, pristine crater lakes, sacred caves, and lush tropical forests full of exotic wildlife.
Daily sketching at unique destinations will provide a memorable souvenir of your trip. We use Ubud and Candidasa as our bases and take excursions from there, at a relaxed pace. Day trips from Ubud will include the monkey forest, Batur volcano and Batur Lake at Kintamani. There will be ample time to take in the scenery and atmosphere, as well as sketch the surrounding environment. Learn to make traditional Indonesian and Balinese dishes at a cooking class in a local village. This follows a market visit where we purchase the ingredients. A temple visit will incorporate Balinese painting, with one of Bali’s best known artists. From Ubud we travel to the east coast of Bali to Candidasa, where our hotel is located right on the beach. We visit Buda Keiling and watch silver work being crafted. The palace of the East Bali King, Puri Karangasem is also on the itinerary, along with a visit to the magnificent Tirta Gangga Water Palace where we will enjoy a wonderful lunch from the restaurant which looks over the gardens. Sketch the terraced rice paddies outside Sideman, and enjoy lunch at a retreat high in the mountains with spectacular views. Sketching
There will be group and individual demonstrations and tuition, both before and during the day. Daily reviews are an important aspect of this tour. You will learn various sketching techniques using different mediums, but predominantly pen and watercolour wash. This art tour is suitable for all skill levels, from the absolute beginner to the experienced artist. Non sketching partners are welcome and will be travelling with the group throughout the day.
